Testing Services

The focus of STaR is on the testing of cold-formed steel (CFS) structural members intended for building construction. Testing capabilities are always expanding, but currently limited to static load testing of components for strength and deflection measurements. These tests will commonly be used by the client as the basis for engineering load tables or as background data for product development.

Typical projects would include:

  • Vacuum box testing (ASTM E72) of non-loadbearing steel stud and gypsum board composite walls for the determination of maximum limiting heights in accordance with ICC-ES AC 86.
  • Screw penetration tests into steel studs (ASTM C645 and ASTM C1002).
  • Fastening systems for use with re-entrant type steel deck panels (ICC-ES AC 379).
  • Flexural, shear and web crippling tests on cold-formed steel structural members such as C-section joists with large lip reinforced web holes, multi-web steel deck or custom shapes (ICC-ES AC 46).
  • Axial or combined axial and lateral loading on steel stud wall assemblies.
  • Flexural testing of structural panel systems (ASTM E72).
  • Flexural testing of composite steel deck and concrete floor systems to determine shear-bond capacity (ASCE 3 and ICC-ES AC 43).
  • Strength and deflection limit states of CFS connectors (e.g. clip angles or specialty connectors) subject to shear, tension, compression or moment (ICC-ES AC 261).
  • Strength of joist hangers or bearing stiffeners used with CFS floor joists.
  • Flexural testing of gypsum board products (ASTM C473).
  • Concrete compression testing (ASTM C39).
  • Any other project that can be accommodated within the capabilities of STaR's equipment and personnel.
